An Ancient Structure, A Living Memory
Leanach Cottage is believed to be the only surviving structure from the Culloden battlefield. Its walls, made from stone and earth, reflect the simplicity of 18th-century Highland life. War, Grief, and Suppression
The Battle of Culloden marked the end of the Jacobite uprising, led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart (“Bonnie Prince Charlie”). In a battle that lasted barely an hour, around 2,000 Highlanders lost their lives, most of them fighting for Scottish independence.
In the aftermath, the British Crown responded with harsh crackdowns—outlawing Highland dress, disbanding clans, and repressing Gaelic culture and language.
It’s believed that Leanach Cottage may have sheltered wounded soldiers or terrified families escaping the violence. Its crumbling walls seem to hold onto the cries, prayers, and unspoken oaths of that dark hour.
Outlander and a New Connection to the Past
Leanach Cottage gained renewed global attention through the popular TV series Outlander. Through its blend of historical fact and romantic fiction, the series reintroduced millions to the story of Culloden and made the cottage a symbol of both tragedy and timeless love.
